The Longines watches were first created in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz, after he became the owner of a small watch parts workshop in the Swiss Jura mountain village of Saint-Imier. Since then, the Longines watch have blazed a trail of excellences and innovation.
The company has been responsible for several technological breakthroughs and is known for its elegant designs all over the world. It made history in 1912 by using an electric wire that activated and stopped the timing mechanism at the start and finish of a race.
Following this, it was appointed the official time keeper for several international sports events, including several summer and winter Olympics. Longines was also used to time Lindberg’s first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Subsequently it developed the Hour Angle watch, based on a design that was drawn by Lindberg himself.
The company launched its first wrist watch in 1905. In 1960 it launched the world’s thinnest electromagnetic watch and in 1969 it launched the Longines Ultra-Quartz. This was the world’s first cybernetic electronic quartz watch. The next year it was the first to use an alphanumeric display for television. In 1979, Longines collaborated with other manufacturers to develop the world’s thinnest quartz watch, the famous Conquest VHP (Very High Precision).
The Longines watches are known for their unique combination of elegance and precision. The company has had more than a century of close cooperation with top-level sports, and holds scores of horological patents and dozens of design awards.
